After a couple of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! it became clear that one of the weaknesses of my car that needed addressing was cooling. Both the water and oil get to levels that I consider an issue towards the end of a 20 minute session. Making matters worse because it is a WRX I have of course made matters worse by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! since then through various !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! meaning that issue is only going to get worse.

Fixing the water is easy at least 4 reputable companies make options for upgraded radiators that have been shown to be effective. Oil on the other hand is a bit of a different story. A couple companies do make off the shelf kits, but the both have issues. One is from a company that doesn’t have the best quality reputation and blowing off an oil line would be catastrophic, the other a bit of reading will show that the core they are using is undersized for sustained use on a track.

So since I’m a mechanical engineer who enjoys a project I set about specing out a custom set up. After mulling it around for weeks I finally pulled the trigger on some parts and they all (mostly) arrived this week!

Some brackets with vibration isolation that I hope are actually useful

The core, plate and most of the plumbing

Quick test fit, Holy crap -10 lines are huge!

Beneath the core is the Cardboard Aided Design template I used to make sure the core would fit months ago.

One of my fittings was back ordered, but I definitely have enough to pull the bumper and figure out exactly how I’m going to mount this thing hopefully this weekend.

eh, they’re not the worst, you can get them cheap and when they leak they warranty them right out. I’ve got a few friends with them who have no issues. That said, no I did not get a Mishimoto.

What’s a good manufacturer for oil coolers in your opinion?

Following this with interest for my clone of your car. Even my non-boosted BRZ could hit 250F oil temps on the track so I was considering a cooler for that, too.

As an ME with a ‘15 WRX and access to a hand 3D scanner, I think I’m going to have to get some designing done. I’ve been thinking about doing some skid plate work. Perhaps a custom oil cooler mount is in my future as well.

Having a model would certainly make the bracket design easier.

So far I have some P-clips, a rivnut gun assorted hardware and some plumbing straps. I’m pretty sure with that, a medium hammer and a sturdy vice I can cobble something together.

Otherwise I can go down the street to mcmastercarr for whatever other parts I need for my concoction.

As a wise CH-53 Airframer once said: “Beat to fit, paint to match.”

Hang on a second there, I’m the only one on here I’ve ever heard say “go to McMaster-Carr” as it is practically between where I work and home. Which location do you happen to be talking about?
